LCL and FCL container shipping

In the context of international shipping trade, "container" or "shipping container" is virtually synonymous with "intermodal freight container," a container designed to be moved from one mode of transport to another without unloading and reloading.

Basic terms LCL and FCL

The cargo shipped by the sea freight is carried out in containers.
If the quantity of your goods is small and its volume is less than 15CBM(Cubic Meter), the freight forwarder will help you ship your goods by LCL.
It implies you have to share a container with other importers because your cargo load is less than a container.
This is known as LCL(Less Than Container Load).
LCL use CBM as the unit to calculate the freight.

FCL(Full Container Load) is when your cargo quantity is large enough, and you can fill one or more containers.

In this case, the freight is calculated on the basis of the whole container.

Generally, it will be cheaper than LCL freight.

The sea freight fares are changing in real time that is determined by the shipping company.

Full containers cost anywhere from $2000-$4000 for a 20’ container to North America (always cheaper to the West Coast) and LCL is pretty close to fractionally equivalent of how much of the container you’re using up (if you’re taking up 25% of the 40’ container, you’ll pay around 25% the cost of a 40’ container).
